Counseling

We offer a variety of counseling options.

• Individual Counseling

Individual therapy is where we work with clients one-on-one. Our goal is to provide a safe, caring, confidential, and judgement free environment for individuals to explore their feelings, beliefs, and behaviors. When some people begin therapy, they are not able to name or explain their problem(s). These clients usually tell us that something is not “right” or that they just need help. We work together to identify aspects of their lives that they would like to change or better understand. During this process, we help individuals get to know themselves, set personal goals, and work toward desired change.

We specialize in several unique forms of therapy: Positive Psychology, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). We pull from these forms of treatment to provide effective and individualized care for each client.

• Child and Adolescent Counseling

Children and adolescents experience emotional distress in a variety of ways. They may struggle socially, have difficulty learning, act aggressively towards others, develop rituals, use alcohol or drugs, cling to caregivers, self-harm, or develop negative beliefs and feelings about themselves. These maladaptive behaviors and emotions often interfere with healthy emotional, social, and intellectual development.

Child and adolescent therapy focuses on underlying emotional problems that hinder beneficial progress. In therapy, we help children understand their distress. We then rehearse appropriate ways to react to this stress in the future. The goal of this process is to create lasting changes in emotional responses and behaviors.

When appropriate, we consult with teachers, pediatricians, psychiatrists, and school counselors. If necessary, we go into the child’s school and observe to provide behavioral support for the child and teacher.

• Christian Counseling

When counseling Christians, we often integrate faith with the principles of psychology to improve mental health and relationships. We incorporate scripture, prayer, and the Holy Spirit to help clients develop a deeper and more resilient faith. The spiritual growth that takes place during this process enables clients to deal with life’s challenges more effectively.

• Family Counseling

We are often approached to help a child with his/her behavioral or emotional problems. However, it is important to note that these problems do not exist in a vacuum. They must be addressed within the context of family. We do this by providing counseling for the parents, siblings, extended family, and faithful friends.

In family counseling, we help families understand their unique group dynamics.  We use this knowledge to improve communication, solve problems, and create a better-functioning home environment.

• Social Skills Training

Strong social skills are vital building blocks for successful social interactions. Social Skills Training (SST) helps people learn the subtle art of verbal and non-verbal communication. In SST, we teach appropriate interpersonal skills, how to decipher language cues, and how to interpret non-verbal cues. This knowledge enhances the understanding of various perspectives, which increases emotional regulation during conflict.

In SST, we work with families and individuals to determine the specific skill deficits, which create challenges in social settings. When a desired area is targeted and identified, we will practice those skills in the clinic and share ways to practice outside of the clinic. Oftentimes, changes are made in one or two areas at a time to ensure success. Depending on the need, SST can take place in a small group setting or individual sessions.
